Job TitleClinical EngineerLocationJesse Brown VA Medical CenterChicago, ILDescriptionThe Clinical Engineer is responsible for managing and maintaining medical equipment and technology within the VA Biomedical Engineering department. This role ensures the safe, effective, and compliant operation of medical technology, supporting patient care and hospital operations. The Clinical Engineer functions as a subject matter expert in biomedical engineering, providing guidance on medical equipment management, regulatory compliance, and emerging healthcare technologies. The role requires collaboration with clinical, administrative, and technical teams to optimize medical technology use and integration within the healthcare environment.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned. - Conduct a medical equipment management program that complies with applicable healthcare standards and regulatory agencies.
- Develop and implement a continuing education curriculum focused on the safe and effective use of medical technology for clinical and technical staff.
- Manage a recall and safety alert program for medical devices, including hazard investigations, to ensure compliance with patient safety goals, the Safe Medical Devices Act (SMDA), and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements.
- Perform capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment, covering the entire lifecycle from initial concept and installation to effective implementation.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in biomedical engineering, directly supporting specialized clinical technology, including system administration, training, quality assurance, and life-cycle management.
- Advise clinical and administrative staff on medical technology, including the viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and safety of both existing and emerging technologies.
- Apply project management principles to the deployment of medical equipment and health information technologies.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, including technical and professional staff at various levels, to align technology solutions with organizational goals.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, industry regulatory requirements, and International Standard Organization (ISO) standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate risks associated with medical device usage, cybersecurity, and interoperability.
- Provide leadership in medical technology evaluation, procurement, and implementation processes.
- Support continuous process improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, efficiency, and patient safety.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning related to medical equipment readiness and functionality.
- Assist in vendor and contract management for medical equipment service agreements.
- Contribute to hospital-wide initiatives involving medical technology standardization and integration.
- Develop technical documentation and procedures for medical equipment operations and security compliance.
- Support research initiatives involving new medical technologies and their potential applications within the VA healthcare system.
- Participate in national and regional working groups focused on medical technology management and safety.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.TravelThis position does not require travel.Work ScheduleThis position requires on-site work five days per week. Adhoc telework may be authorized.Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Certification as a Clinical Engineer (CCE).
- A minimum of three years of hospital or healthcare experience maintaining medical equipment or managing a hospital medical equipment program.
- Strong understanding of medical device networking, cybersecurity, and interoperability within healthcare settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of concepts related to computer-based medical systems, networking protocols, and information security as they apply to medical technology within VHA.
- Competency in conducting and maintaining a medical equipment management program compliant with regulatory standards and healthcare best practices.
- Ability to develop and implement a curriculum for staff training on medical technology use and safety.
- Ability to manage recall and safety alert programs for medical devices and investigate potential hazards.
- Proficiency in capital asset planning, infrastructure management, and long-term medical technology investment strategies.
- Experience providing technical leadership, guidance, and troubleshooting support for specialized clinical technologies.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements, industry best practices, and ISO standards for healthcare technology management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) and asset tracking systems.
- Must provide documentation of eligibility to legally work in the United States without an employer sponsored visa.
- Must be able to pass client background screening for security clearance.
