JOB TITLE: Systems AdministratorDEPARTMENT: Communications and Community EngagementDIVISION: Technology ServicesSALARY: NegotiableCLOSING DATE: Until FilledJob Summary/ScopeResponsible for managing and maintaining computer systems, networks, and servers within the City of St Joseph. Ensures the smooth operation, security, and efficiency of the IT infrastructure. Assists in the implementation of and/or installing and configuring hardware and software, troubleshooting technical issues, monitoring system performance, managing user accounts and access rights, implementing security measures, and performing regular backups. Provides technical training to City employees as needed. No supervisory responsibilities. No budgetary responsibilities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with installing, configuring, and maintaining servers, network devices, and software applications.
  • Provides technical support to end users, resolves hardware and software issues, and assists with upgrades and migrations.
  • Performs hardware and software upgrades to maintain an efficient and standardized desktop computing environment.
  • Assists with network performance monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and updating of the City's network switches and routers.
  • Performs regular backups and implements disaster recovery procedures to ensure data integrity and availability of all network stored data.
  • Assists Public Safety Network Administrator with implementation, ongoing maintenance, and system upgrades of the public safety software and systems.
  • Assists in troubleshooting, maintaining, and updating servers throughout the City's network, including servers in the Communications Center at the LEC.
  • Assists in installation, configuration, and maintenance of police car fleet's laptops.
  • May assist with public safety upgrades to the telephone/911 system and radio computers.
  • Collaborates with other members of the IT team to develop and implement IT policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborates with vendors and other members of the IT team to plan and implement system upgrades, patches, and enhancements.
  • Continues education to maintain an expertise level to provide acceptable computer systems performance and reliability.
  • Stays up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends and makes recommendations for system enhancements and improvements.Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge about and understanding of the technical aspects of a variety of computer-related equipment including PC hardware, TCP/IP networking protocols, microwave data communications, digital recording equipment, enhanced 911 operations, virtual private networks, and wireless communications.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with users of varying degrees of expertise.
  • Ability to use creativity and logical thought in the analysis and solution of complex problems.
  • Relevant certifications (i.e., MCSE, Network+, CCNA) are a plus.
  • Knowledge of Cisco Router IOS.
  • Knowledge of network server operating systems, including Windows, UNIX, and LINUX.
  • Knowledge of common computer applications, including Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and SQL queries.
  • Familiarity with backup and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Proficiency in managing virtualization technologies (i.e., WMware, Hyper-V).
  • Valid driver's license required.Material and Equipment Directly UsedDaily use of computers and other computer and printer equipment and appropriate tools used in the maintenance and repair of computers. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.Working Environment/Physical RequirementsWork is performed in an office setting with a controlled environment; however, it can occasionally be in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic). Job can require long hours working at a computer terminal or in tight quarters during installation of equipment. Occasionally lifts 10 to 20 pounds, with the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; Must be able to climb ladders.EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent required.
