DescriptionSALARY$22.716 - $34.947POSITION SUMMARYObtains a list of rail cars by number to be cleaned from foreman and prepares rail cars for motor cleaning process.QualificationsPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares rail car for cleaning by removing covers and opening prescribed motor and compartment doors.
  • Operates controls on the dust recovery system which cleans the rail car motor.
  • Cleans work area at the end of the shift.
  • Cleans various other shop areas, empties and removes trash.
  • Performs the duties of car servicer upon request.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Monitors and reports any suspicious person, item, etc.
  • Guides passengers to secure areas.
  • Directs emergency personnel to problem areas.

    • Required to properly identify and report any suspicious person, package or item.
    • Required to assist with the safety of passengers during emergency situations.
    • Required to guide emergency personnel to a specified problem.
    • Assists in restoring to normal operations.
    • Required to know the prescribed Maintenance Section motor cleaning procedures.
    • Must perform the physical activities associated with this position and pass a physical examination.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
      • Standing while performing job duties.
      • Walking within work area.
      • Lifting and carrying rail component covers, filter boxes, and other materials up to 100 lbs.
      • Pulling air hose, equipment, and covers to train panels.
      • Climbing pit stairs and ladders.
      • Balancing when crossing pit cat walk.
      • Stooping while walking under rail car.
      • Kneeling to reach areas under rail car, and to remove interior covers.
      • Crouching while walking under rail car and removing under car and side covers.
      • Reaching to open compartments and to screw nuts and bolts.
      • Handling equipment, hand tools, sockets, ratchets, screwdriver, and air wrench.
      • Fingering and feeling to replace covers, compartments, and VMT system.
      • Talking to converse with yardmaster and co-workers, and to perform team job.
      • Hearing P.A. announcements, alarms, and rail car horn.
      • Seeing rail cover screws, nuts, bolts, pit stairs, proximity to third rail, and moving rail cars.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
        • Must have a knowledge of the required safety equipment to be worn for self-protection during the preparation and cleaning of the rail car motor (face respirator, work gloves, helmet, safety glasses, ear plugs).
        • Required to communicate effectively in oral and written form.WORKING CONDITIONS
          • Typical maintenance shop working conditions.
          • Temporary extreme cold and heat when terminal doors are open.
          • Wetness and/or humidity from snow melting on rail car.
          • Noise of electrical dust recovery system.
          • Vibration of rail car idling.
          • Electrical hazards from exposed rail parts and components, and battery voltage capacitors.
          • Burn hazards from accidental grounding with 600-volt stinger, batteries, hot equipment, and grid resistors.
          • Explosion hazards when handling trolley shoes (600 volts) and when stinging the train in and out.
          • Chemical hazards from graffiti removers.
          • Height hazards while working inside rail cars and around pits.
          • Automobile fumes from expressway traffic exhaust.
          • Odors from arced electrical components.
          • Dust from the motor blower system.
