We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Fishbein Fellow on our Scientific Publication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.The Morris Fishbein Fellowship in Medical Editing is a unique 1-year fellowship opportunity offered by JAMA to introduce physicians to all facets of editing and publishing a major medical journal. The fellowship is comprised of longitudinal experiences that run throughout the duration of the year as well as shorter time-limited rotations.RESPONSIBILITIES:Objectives:

  • By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will understand and/or gain direct experience with:
  • The factors involved with editorial decision-making about manuscripts for the various types of articles published in JAMA.
  • Handling of original research manuscripts (beginning with the initial submission and evaluation; to coordinating peer review if applicable; and then to revising and acceptance for publication).
  • The process of peer review, including the roles of reviewers, and strategies for obtaining reviewers and utilizing reviews to facilitate decisions about manuscript disposition.
  • How journal issues are put together, including considerations about balance of content within and across issues and coordination with external events.
  • Various modes of content publication and dissemination (eg, print, electronic) and repackaging of content in various formats (eg, visual abstracts, etc).
  • Development and production of audio and video content (including weekly Editor's Summary podcasts).
  • Technical aspects of manuscript editing and the AMA style guidelines.
  • Writing in various styles for different audiences (eg, writing for patients in the JAMA Patient Page or in a medical journalism style for the Medical News section).
  • Ethical and legal challenges inherent in medical editing and publishing.
  • Social media strategy and how other media cover what JAMA publishes.Specific Activities:
    • Longitudinal activities (year-long activities):
    • Handling original research manuscripts as the handling editor
    • Attending editorial meetings on a weekly basis (eg, Manuscript Meeting, Clinical Meeting, Issue Review)
    • Producing scripts for the weekly JAMA Editor's Summary podcast
    • Writing JAMA Patient PagesTime-limited rotations (2-4 weeks typically):
      • Manuscript Editing
      • Letters to the Editor
      • Tables and Figures
      • Medical News
      • Medical Graphics
      • Legal Issues
      • Ethics
      • Media Relations and Social Media
      • HumanitiesMay include other responsibilities as assigned REQUIREMENTS:
      • MD or DO degree
      • Completion of residency training in any specialty
      • Proficient writing abilityThe American Medical Association is located at 330 N. Wabash
        Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 and is convenient to all public transportation in
        Chicago. This role is an exempt position, and the salary for this position is $80,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration, geographical location, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience. Employees are also eligible to participate in an incentive plan.
