EngineerIUOE Local 399Chicago, ILAn Apprentice/Trainee Engineer is
an entry-level position designed to cultivate future skilled
Operating Engineers through a comprehensive three-year program.
This role combines hands-on experience in building maintenance and
operations with formal education at the union school. Apprentices
work alongside experienced Engineers, learning to maintain,
monitor, and repair various building systems including HVAC,
electrical, plumbing, and fire safety. As they progress, they take
on increasingly complex tasks, from basic maintenance to
troubleshooting and repairing equipment. This apprenticeship not
only develops technical skills but also fosters understanding of
workplace safety, team collaboration, and critical system
standards, preparing individuals for a rewarding career as
qualified Engineers capable of efficiently maintaining and
operating building systems.Responsibilities:At the direction of the
supervisor, maintaining, monitoring, and performing preventive
maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems
including: fire/life safety, mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, controls),
electrical (lighting, UPS, PDU, generators, primary switch gear),
emergency backup systems, and hot water systems; monitors
operation, adjusts, and maintains refrigeration, and air
conditioning equipment; boilers, and ventilating and hot water
heaters; pumps, valves, piping, and filters; other mechanical and
electrical equipment; record readings and make adjustments where
necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment. Requires the
ability to analyze the operation of various systems, determine the
cause of any problems/malfunctions, and take corrective action as
required.
- Install and repair plumbing/piping/tubing; wire single and
three-phase motors (single & two-speed); run conduit; pull wiring
to machinery, motors, operating parts, etc.; install and rebuild
pumps and motors; install and rebuild air compressors; heat
exchangers; replace bearings in all types of motors; replace seals
on pumps; install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water
systems, and associated controls; assist other mechanics and
operators with major repairs and maintenance of building and
equipment. Install, repair, and maintain electrical controls,
switching, and motor controls. Operate and support the oversight of
maintenance of critical equipment including UPS systems,
generators, chillers, and critical air conditioning units.
- Monitor operation, repair, and maintain refrigeration, water
cooling, and air conditioning equipment; boilers, heating,
ventilating, and hot water equipment; pumps, valves, piping, and
filters; other mechanical and electrical equipment; recording
readings as necessary to assure proper operation of equipment;
responsible for reporting any problems/malfunctions.
- Comply with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage,
and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintains a clean and safe
workplace.
- Responsible for overseeing the activities of contractors
working within the building either as representatives of the
building itself or tenants operating within the buildings.
- Responsible for keeping records of buildings rounds and
readings, all engineering logs, and engineering data sheets.
- Responsible for advance training and notification to all
contractors so that they are informed and knowledgeable with
respect to the building's critical functions and the work they are
to perform, including an incident contact response list.
- Responsible for understanding and complying with emergency
escalation procedures. Ensure that the Working in Critical Areas
Standards is a well-understood process among the building staff,
engineers, and contractors who perform work on the building's
critical infrastructure.
- Ensure strict adherence to Critical System Standards.
- Performs additional job duties as requested.Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong interest in mechanical and electrical systems.
- Willingness to attend Local 399 school for the full three-year
training period. Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge in
practical situations.
- Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Physical ability to perform required tasks, including lifting
and working in various positions.
- Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving
record.Training Program:
- Three-year apprenticeship program, with potential for shorter
duration based on performance and agreement between the Union and
Employer.
- Four-month probationary period at the start of employment.
